Knowledge of a place--where you are and where you come from--is intertwined with knowledge of who you are. Landscape, in other words, shapes mindscape.
David Orr

Such is the nature of being Canadian. In a land of immigrants, a culture based on a mosaic of others, where you are and from where you come are equally important in defining who you are as a Canadian. In a land of tolerance and freedom, the True North Strong and Free, where all the races and religions of the world can live together in relative harmony, an understanding of one's culture and heritage, with acceptance of the achievements and atrocities of our past, highlight our uniqueness as individuals and help to embrace the uniqueness of others.

Each separate being in the universe returns to a common source.
Returning to the source is serenity.
If you don't realize the source, you stumble in confusion and sorrow.
When you realize where you come from, you naturally become tolerant.
Lao-tzu

The benefit of such a society is that you can share a beer with anyone. I like beer, and I like sharing, so a better appreciation of such things is good for me. And so, with a desire to further experience my own heritage and learn how my blood, my genes, my people came to be, (and with intense pressure from family as the only one that hadn't yet visited,) I set off for Portugal.

Each blade of grass has its spot on earth whence it draws its life, its strength; and so is man rooted to the land from which he draws his faith together with his life.
Joseph Conrad

Portugal is the land of my forefathers, and I don't have any Italian blood, but going further back to the development of the Portuguese language and the centre of the Christian faith, my origins point to things Latin, so Tuscany seemed like an equally important place to visit.

Also, they have good wine there, and it made for a convenient vacation away from the family vacation.

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.
George Moore

I went in search of fun and fancy, wine and wisdom, spirits and spirituality, found it, and expect to find more here at home. Come and explore the Homeland with us, as Chicken Noodle gives you the low-down on the fun and adventure, and George the Large-Footed Monkey pops in with some helpful local info from time to time.
