Cup of Soup

Wed, Nov 7, 2001

When it comes to other people using my computer to check email, surf, etc., I usually tell them, jokingly, that I only have one rule: No gay porn.

This is precisely what I told one of my roommates late last night. She was sitting in my chair, and asked if she could surf on my computer. "Sure," I told her. "Do whatever you like, just don't go searching for gay porn."

"Is that your rule?" she asked. "Has anyone ever broke it?"

"Well, I once discovered someone had sought non-gay-male porn when I wasn't around," I recalled - a true and unsettling discovery, "but otherwise, no."

"So lesbian is OK, then?" she asked.

"Oh, that would be fine, thank you."

"OK, well I just want to check my email, but I'll remember: 'No gay porn'."

She proceeded to check her messages, giggling in a drunken manner at the numerous forwards and spams she had received that day. Not five minutes had gone by when she came across a message from another of our roommates containing a link. "Click here for great music" it read.

She clicked.

Wouldn't you know, it was as if it was sent deliberately to spite me. Up pops a new window that reads in big block letters "I'M LOOKING AT GAY PORN RIGHT NOW", along with a collage of pictures and some peculiar noises.

The irony was just too intense, and the laughter would not subside for a very long time.

Only 47 more days until Christmas!

I hurt my ankle and my knee playing ultimate frisbee last night. Ow.

'Twas a good weekend, with a gathering at Weaver's Arms on Friday, and a wine and cheese at a friend's place on Saturday. I brought two of my lady roommates to the event at Weaver's, and they seemed to be a big hit with the guys; enough so that the girls were able to get us to do this.

I'm hooked on The Molson Canadian Mile. How far would you go for a beer? At this point, I would go as far as level 12...

Today, Toronto's Waterfront Redevelopment Plan goes under public review. This project can do some astounding things for the city of Toronto, and the prospects are incredibly exciting. I simply cannot wait to see the new parklands, a new Younge St pier, the Queen's Quay scenic drive, or the absence of the Gardiner Expressway. Lend your support for the waterfront, and enjoy the benefits of the beautiful city to come.

Macleans Magazine has released its university rankings, and the University of Waterloo has been ranked #1 in the comprehensive category and #1 in reputation for the 10th year in a row. Hooray for UW!

Well, I seem to have some tough competition on my hands. I was introduced to the Molson Canadian Mile by one of my roommates, and she was stewing over the fact that I had made it to level 12. Well, today she walloped my lead by reaching level 19 and attaining a score of nearly 238,000.

Nuts to my SoftEng project; I've got to practice...

I think that saying I live in an interesting house is an understatement.

Take Saturday night, for instance. I went out to a bar to watch the hockey game with Nick, and then returned home to continue my nasty, nasty databases assignment. Not long after I returned - at all about the same time - I had roommates involved in the following situations:

  • One was at a friend's house and throwing up incredible amounts of vomit after enjoying a texas-mickey party a little too much
  • One was nowhere to be found
  • One came home shouting profanities at what probably wasn't the top of her lungs, but very loudly nonetheless
  • One was locked away in her room with her boyfriend - I comment no further
  • One came back from the bar and was soon followed by my SoftEng partner, whom she happened to find whilst there
  • One came home so thoroughly drunk that a friend of his had to carry him upstairs to bed fireman-style, whereupon he threw up in the popcorn
  • And finally, one had suddenly and completely lost any appetite for her bag of popcorn

Yes, interesting is definitely an understatement.

Be forewarned: If I'm with a group of people and we see you walking down the street and someone yells the word "purple" followed by your name, then run away very very fast. Just trust me.

It was snowing today here in Waterloo. I woke up this morning at about 9:30 to see all the cars and rooftops were covered white. The snow was falling very gently and softly most of the morning; it was very picturesque. The room where I have my first class has a wall of windows; I spent the whole hour and a half completely unaware of the lecture, and just watching the snow fall, as the flakes swooped and soared outside in silent musical melody. Then, on my way to the ice rink, I walked slowly along the paths around campus watching the snow drift between the trees and around the buildings. Then Bing Crosby stepped out from behind a tree and started singing carols.

OK, I made that last part up.

But, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go...

Sun, Nov 25, 2001

Lectures are nearly over, and that, of course, means our SoftEng project is nearly due. 3 more days.... sleep has become a luxury over the past while.

I did manage to get my Christmas decorations up in my room; only one more month! Stores have been in full Christmas swing for quite some time now, and I know of a few people that are already tired of it; many of whom complain about the commercialism. I think it's a shame that people feel that way. The Christmas spirit is much more powerful than any commercial advertising, and the annoyances of television ads and corny music are insignificant compared to the pure merriment and child-like joy that comes with the celebration of the hope for peace on Earth and good will towards men.

And the Grinch with his grinch feet ice-cold in the snow, stood puzzling, and puzzling. "How could it be so? It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes, or bags!"
And he puzzled, and puzzled, 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store? Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?"

4:30 in the morning is not the ideal time to still be in the school labs. But, at least the project is progressing. On Sunday, we made our first successful call, and this morning our first long-distance call. Crack out the champagne!

One of the best gifts a SPU can get is the gift of Oreos.

Yesterday was the first time I found myself upset to see the last lecture of a course end. Big applause to Prof. Ron McCarville for teaching the best elective I've ever taken.

Early this morning, we got our SoftEng project to perform all our basic required tasks. We don't demo the project until Monday, and I have an exam and an assignment to do before that, but I can feel the pressure ready to remove itself from my tense and strained shoulders.

SPU's Taxi Service is open for business, servicing all areas in grocery stores. It's a bumpy ride, and the seating is a little cramped, but you get food tossed to you every now and then, and if you tip well, I'll treat you to some fancy sharp turns and skids. It may be sixth-class travel, but it's first-class fun, and aside from a few fender benders with other commuters experiencing a case of aisle-rage, I have an excellent safety record, with no casualties to date. Call now! Time is limited, as I only need so many groceries...

A Happy Anniversary! One year ago today, a young SPU made his debut as a member of Canadian World Domination, courtesy of the "Darn you Fulda!" thread:

SPU, happy to have joined

And thus, the legend of SPU was born. The thread continued with a quick bio, beginning with pants size.
